Fr. Matthew continues his exploration of the liturgy with the pre-Sanctus and Sanctus. He explores first the Biblical origins of the Sanctus with reference to Isaiah 6 and Revelation 4. He notes the Hebrew language and its use of adjectives. In the Hebrew, Holy, Holy is equivalent to the English Holier (comparative) while Holy, Holy, Holy indicates Holiest (superlative). The song is therefore, as indicated in the pre-Sanctus, an opportunity to express our adoration of God who is not just holy, or holier than others, but the holiest, and to join with the angels, archangels, and all the company of heaven in their unending hymn of praise. We bow in humility as we offer this praise, and we cross ourselves at the end of this most holy song of praise.
